What are the top 10 web design mistakes and what you can do to avoid making them:

1.  Slow load time

Studies show that customers abandon slow loading websites at an alarming rate. If your website page takes more than a second or two to load, you can use a tool like Pingdon or GTMetrix to determine why.

2.  Website is too busy

You’ve seen them, the websites that have so much going on that you aren’t sure what you are looking at. When there is too much text, your user can become overwhelmed. Your website should be clear and concise drawing the users attention to what service or product you provide, and how they can support you.

3.  Walls of text

Speaking of text, your website shouldn’t be an essay. Users tend to skim websites so keep it short and sweet.

4.  Illegible text

If your text is too small or in a color that fades into the background, you are likely to have a higher drop rate. Make sure your text size is easily seen by using contrasting colors in an appropriate font size.

5.  Lack of mobile scaling

More than half of the searches to your website come from a mobile device. Therefore, your website should include a responsive mobile version. Make sure to view both version of your website before publishing.

6.  No call to action

It’s all about conversion rate and if a customer lands on your website, a quick Call to Action button should be front and center so they know exactly what they need to do to result in a sale.

7.  Unclear navigation

Were you trying to be unique with the navigation bar or home button? While creativity can be good in certain circumstances, you should still follow basic and traditional web design guidelines when it comes to the home button and navigation bar.

8.  Consistent page theme

Customers visit a website at least twice before making a purchase. Sometimes, customers bookmark pages that may or may not be your homepage. Therefore, all of your web pages should have consistent branding and a consistent theme.

9.  Irrelevant Pop-ups

Too many pop-ups will not only annoy your user but they may abandon the site altogether. If your website has more than 2, it’s time to reevaluate their use.

10. Ineffective business purpose

Is your business objective clear?  If users can’t determine what your website purpose is in the first 30 seconds, your bounce rate may increase. Make sure your message is clear, concise, and to the point.
